Reflection on Social Media Case 1: McDStories
McDStories Study
This was an interesting study for
me to read about because I vividly remember when this hashtag became worldwide.
I remember actually having a few friends that tweeted out their McDstories of
how they had an awful burger or bad service, they only got a few retweets and
favorites out of it but it was something that was fun and entertaining to read
all the different stories people had. This was something that the McDonalds corporation
took a big hit from and caused a lot of lost business and bad stereotypes. It
makes me wonder what the people who started this “twitter campaign” were
thinking when they thought of the McDStories hashtag, it would seem obvious that
with how many people have eaten at McDonalds in the world that it could have
caused negative things to happen. And it certainly did cause a lot worse then
good, there was severe backlash on the company and the products of McDonalds. After
reading a few articles about this twitter campaign gone completely wrong, I think
it would have been a lot better if Mcdonalds only ran the campaign on Instagram
or facebook, because with twitter, it is a lot easier to type up a tweet and
send it out, but with Instagram people would be a lot more reluctant to
actually post a picture of their bad experience at McDonalds. The ratio of Instagram
posts to twitter posts or Facebook posts to twitter posts is very lopsided,
with twitter posts being a lot more than Facebook and Instagram. But after the
backlash of all the negative McDStories, I think it opened the eyes of the
owners and executives of McDonalds that things needed to change. Which could
have turned out as a pro behind all of the cons. This situation is a perfect
example for other companies and corporations to learn from.
Chad you did a really good job explaining the information with McDonalds hash tag issue. I do agree with you that McDonalds should have just done the hash tag on Facebook and Instagram instead of using Twitter. Awesome job!
