Reflection on Social Media Case 8: Pastor's 10% to God
This is a very
interesting article http://www.patheos.com/blogs/christianpiatt/2013/02/a-breakdown-of-infamous-applebees-pastor-tip-gate/.
Giving tips is something that people are very opinionated on, in the United States it is the ethical thing to do, and is something that I make sure I get
right whenever I go out, I make sure its at least 20% or more depending on the
service I get. But when I asked my roommate who grew up in Nuremberg Germany what
he usually tips, he told me he rarely ever tips. At first I judged him, calling
him “greedy” and asked him sarcastically if he is “too good” to tip. And then
he further explained that where he is from people rarely tip. I was surprised when
he told me that, He also explained that he did not realize that it is something
that comes off as rude or unethical when you do not tip here in America. He
told me “why should I tip? Why should I give away extra money for people who
are getting paid by their employers for doing their job?” we argued about this
for a while, and finally came to an agreement and he admitted if it’s a restaurant
job where someone is serving as a waiter he will tip a little bit because he
understands that they only get paid a few dollars an hour and the rest of their
paycheck revolves around tips. But if it is something like going to get your
hair cut, he says he will never tip because they are doing their job and are
already getting a base salary. It does make sense in a way, but it is something
I would never do, because I think if someone is giving you any type of service
and there is an option to tip then the right thing to do is tip.
In regards to this article about Pastor bell,
I have to side with the waitress on this one. What the Pastor did was wrong,
but you have to take into account that everyone was raised differently and
everyone comes from different backgrounds, such as my roommate. The Pastors
reputation was damaged because instead of just leaving the 18% tip for her big
group, she went out of her way to scratch the tip out and leave an unnecessary
message regarding god. In my opinion, if you’re a pastor, eating with a big
group of people at Applebee’s with one server? Good service or not, that is not
an easy job. And what would god do? Probably leave a nice tip.
I liked your post chad, I agree that giving a tip that is atlas 20% is the right thing to do!
