New Technology
Social media
addiction is increasing every single day at an extremely high rate. There is no
doubt that a large percentage of kids and adults are addicted to their phones.
This is an issue that I see in all ages, including myself. I can say that I am
in a way addicted to social media. It may not be to an extreme, but I usually
never go a day without checking at least one of my social media platforms. I
love my phone and having access to any kind of information at the palm of my hang,
but I have to admit when I think about myself having an addiction to my phone
it frustrates me. Because I could be spending 2 hours that I spend on my phone
doing something more productive like studying or spending time outside. It
makes me sad when I see young children with social media accounts and they are
constantly on them. I feel like parents should set boundaries and rules for
children and technology, but chances are, the parents themselves are probably
addicted to social media as well and do not see it as an issue.
The reason I am
talking about cell phone addictions is because the start up company that goes
by the name “yondr”, they
provide small
fabric pouches that you put your phone in, which close with a proprietary lock
that can be opened only with a Yondr-supplied gadget, have been used at
concerts and and stand up comedy shows to make the audience more engaged and
not engaged with their phones. Yondr pouches are now being bought by schools
and put in class rooms so as soon as students walk in, they are required to
lock their phone in the pouch and once class is dismissed they can unlock it
from the Yondr unlocking system. The owner of the company says his main
objective is do decrease social media addiction in kids, teens, and adults and
to get them to focus more on the outside world and socializing face to face
with people rather through a screen. Social media provides many great things in
our generation today and it certainly is a huge part of our generation, but
social media addiction is also a huge part of our generation is a becoming a
serious issue. I think Yondr is a step in the right direction for decreasing
social media addictions.
